Over 300 works to be auctioned at CATF's Art for Life

by Kaizaad Kotwal

Columbus If there is one thing you do on April 15-other than make sure the taxes are in order make it down to the 2006 Art for Life auction in Columbus to ogle at, and perhaps purchase, an assortment of art being auctioned off to help raise funds for the Columbus AIDS Task Force.

HIV and AIDS continue undaunted in their spread in the U.S. and across the globe. Twenty-plus years into the plague there have been amazing strides made in the medical field to prolong lives and keep people healthier. Stigma has also been brought into check, although that battle too has been tiring.

There has been some fatigue that has set in

for giving and donating to agencies like CATF. Worse still, a complacency has appeared about safe sex and medicinal options available. HIV continues to mutate and, outside of the side effects of the medications, the costs are astronomical and some drugs eventually become ineffective.

The bottom line is that now more than ever, the work done by organizations like CATF, and the fight to eradicate HIV and AIDS, needs all the resources and attention they can get.

Held every two years, the live and silent art auctions attract donations from galleries, collectors and the artists themselves. The works are then auctioned off at two grand parties and the funds raised are funneled to CATF to help

The live auction, featuring the cream of the crop, will be held at the Columbus Museum of Art on April 15. Approximately 400 people are expected to attend the buffet-style dinner preceding the live auction of approximately 13 works.

Following that the silent auction will take place next door at the Canzanni Center of the Columbus College of Art and Design. Here over 300 pieces of art will be available, and, according to CATF development director Sally Blue, there will be something for "everyone's taste and budget."

"One of the attractive things about this event," said Blue, "is that it is really accessible to all kinds of pocketbooks. One can pick up stuff from an emerging artist for one hundred bucks or buy an Aminah Robinson for significantly more."

"If nothing else," she adds, "People can just come, enjoy the art and the party of the year."

Jose Rodriguez, co-chair of this year's Art for Life, said that the goal is to raise more than the record breaking amount of $500,000 in 2004.

"We hope to raise more than a half a million dollars," he said.

"Because this event is held every two years," he added, "we have to bank half the

money raised for the off-year."

CATF has an annual budget of approximately 4 million dollars, so the Art for Life auction contributes a "significant portion of CATF's budget," according to Rodriguez.

While many of the artists featured are from the GLBT community, straight allies pitch in wonderfully to make this even a success year after year.

"We're very blessed," Blue said, “because artists come to us because it is such a prestigious event." The event often brings an artist to the forefront and helps galleries and artists to garner a following. "It is a win-win for artists and gallery owners," said Blue.

Tickets to the live auction are $125 and $65 for the silent auction. Art for Life tickets may be purchased through Ticket Line at 614-265-7561. For other questions and information call 614-340-6756 or visit www.catf.net.
